Spider Veins Leeds
Causes & Treatment Options

Spider veins and thread veins are different names for the same thing – small, dilated blood vessels visible just beneath the surface of the skin, appearing as fine red, purple, or blue lines, often in clusters. They are harmless but a common source of self-consciousness, particularly on the legs.

What Causes Spider Veins?

Genetics
A family history of spider or varicose veins significantly increases the likelihood of developing them.
Prolonged standing or pressure
Occupations or habits involving long periods on your feet, or repeated localised pressure or minor injury to an area, increase venous pressure and can trigger vessel dilation.
Hormonal changes
Pregnancy, the contraceptive pill, and hormonal fluctuations can contribute to their development.
Age
Vessel walls weaken over time, making dilation more likely.
Sun exposure
On the face, UV damage is a significant contributing factor to capillary dilation and visibility.

Treatments at Dr Sebastian Bejma Aesthetics

Microsclerotherapy
The established medical treatment for spider veins and thread veins on the legs and body. A sclerosant solution is injected directly into the vessel, causing it to collapse and fade over several weeks. Multiple sessions are usually required depending on the extent of the veins and the response to treatment.
IPL & Laser
For facial thread veins and smaller vascular lesions, IPL and laser offer an effective non-injection approach – targeting the vessel with light energy to cause it to collapse without needles. Also effective for small vascular lesions on the body where microsclerotherapy is less practical.
